NATIONAL CATALOGS

The directory is organized and searchable by country name, both in English and in the native language. BROWSE here, or SEARCH using the search box on the left. If using the search box, once you get to the search results screen, scroll down the page and select the first entry under "Page text matches". Look for improved search results display in the future.
Each country entry includes:

  • Union catalog(s), if any exist. These must be freely accessible on the web, and represent the holdings of a significant percentage of a country's bibliographic institutions, with a special focus on academic, research, and major public libraries.
  • Secondary resources such as national library catalogs, as well as more limited collective catalogs, if no union catalog exists.
  • Where no union catalogs exist, directories of online library catalogs are included to assist in exploring the holdings of a given nation's libraries.

MULTINATIONAL CATALOGS

  • viaLibri Quick Query Library Search. Offers a simple single search screen to search any one of 58 major catalogs that are significant because of their comprehensive nature or their relevance to art or antiquarian scholars; e.g.: WorldCat, KVK (see below), Incunabula Short Title Catalogue, Artlibraries.net, Yale, Pierpont Morgan Library, etc. There is also an option from this page to do a meta-search for online inventory from over 15,000 antiquarian booksellers worldwide.
If a more targeted bookseller search is preferred, use viaLibri Resources for Bibliophiles where one can search the offerings of any one or any combination of the 14 multi-dealer bookselling sites listed.
  • Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog KVK This well known mega union catalog allows simultaneous searching of many of the world's national library and collective catalogs, catalogs of a few major research libraries, as well as several bookseller's sites. The union catalogs of 11 countries are represented here. Search each individual catalog or any combination.
search language options: Deutsch, English, Español, Français, Italiano.
  • The European Library An attractive portal to the general and specialized national collections of 24 countries of Europe. In most cases, the collections are associated with individual national libraries; however, several union catalogs are also featured. Particularly good for locating digitized works. Search by subject or format categories, or by country. A list of all the national libraries of Europe, along with links to their online catalogs is also available.
search language options: 21 languages, selected from a drop down menu. Also featured is a virtual keyboard (latin alphabet) with diacritics and selected special characters.
  • WorldCat.org : about
Provides access to over 85 million records, representing the holdings of more than 57,000 academic, public, and specialized libraries, mostly in the U.S. but also including hundreds of libraries worldwide. (updated 6/15/07). Once a record is located in the database, the user can identify holding libraries according to proximity to the address provided by the user. For example, a person searching from France will see French locations for their title displayed before those in England or the U.S.

Catalog Search: Worldcat.org

search language options: Deutsch, English, Español, Français, Nederlands, Chinese. Language options appear at the bottom of any search results screen.

An optional but much more limited access to the WorldCat database is the Open WorldCat product which links to WorldCat library holdings through partner sites, such as Yahoo or Google. A search in one of these sites may yield a result which is identified by the phrase "Find in a Library", with a link to the WorldCat record.
